INVISIBILITIES / UNSICHTBARKEITEN

The notion of perception is discussed through the prism of phenomenology as well as art history and the analysis of contemporary works. In collaboration with the UDK, Berlin.

Often, what one can not see, is more determinante that what one sees. Things can be visible and invisibles by different means. The study day evolves around the writings of the art historian Rebecca Solnit who tries to establish a phenomenology of invisibility, stating:  "The first might be things that have material existence – radiation and ozone, for example – , but only rarely become visible. The second would be abstractions as violence and amnesia and the arms race, which surface only as particular acts, consequences and conditions. The third would be culturally repressed things – for instance domestic violence, which has become visible only as its victims acquire voices (...) The fourth would be the rules that govern what we are willing and able to see, since those rules, too, are so seldom scrutinized. The fifth would be all that’s high security, classified, suppressed, hidden, guarded – invisible by government decree: official secrets.
