STUDY DAY

POETICS OF SPACE

Challenging expectations of display and inclusiveness of painting in the context the exhibition space.

By basing our analysis in architectural places on lived experience, we are applying the method of phenomenology to architecture, as developped by the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard

in his book The Poetics of Space (La Poétique de l'Espace, 1958). In his book, Bachelard focuses especially on the personal, emotional response to buildings both in life and in literary works, both in prose and in poetry, and considers spatial types such as the attic, the cellar, drawers and the like. Bachelard implicitly urges architects to base their work on the experiences it will engender rather than on abstract rationales that may or may not affect viewers and users of architecture. How these thoughts can be considered in the context of art, and more specifically in painting ? How to think about a painting as part of an architecture that we live with ?  The symposium is questioning the expectations of display and "fonctionnality " in the context of painting.
